“My brother gets to ride his bike when he goes to school and I asked my mom if I could too.”

Justine and Alec’s mom, Julia, had started biking Alec to school occasionally to help him get some extra physical activity and lose weight at the recommendation of their pediatrician. Alec’s excess weight threatens his normal physical development, and he’d been bullied about his size. Julia read about East Bay Bikes in a local parenting magazine and she and her neighbor decided to get bikes for their kids and take turns “bikepooling” the 2 mile route to and from school.

“I like to ride my bike. Its fun.”

Alec and Justine’s are getting more than just a fun start to their day. They are getting critical daily exercise and developing a healthy habit that will improve their health and stay with them for a lifetime.

  • Fourth grade boys who bike or walk to school have lower BMIs and body fat than non-active commuters. Kids who actively commute to school are also more likely to remain at a healthy weight.

  • A 1997 study published in the Archives of Pediatric and Adolescent Medicine reported that 70% of obese 10- to 13-year-olds become obese adults.

  • Girls who walk or bike to school perform better on tests and longer commutes were associated with higher test scores, regardless of how much exercise students got outside of school according to The AVENA study, Archives of Pediatrics and Adolescent Medicine.
