"Bike It!" is My City Bikes' summer kids biking initiative. We're working with everyone from Nutcase Helmets to professional mountain bike racer Micayla Gatto to inspire and motivate kids to be more active.
Biking for kids is critical. During the summer months, children gain weight at a rate nearly 3 times faster than during the entire school year! Children are at risk for serious health issues like diabetes and even heart disease during their youth and into adulthood when dangerously overweight or obese. Biking is an easy way for all kids to stay active all summer long. Through Bike It! kids will be able to track their progress on their local My City Bikes app, compete with friends to win prizes, and have so much fun doing it they won't even realize its exercise!
Like My City Bikes, Bike It! is the only program of its kind on a national scale. It's the best of technology and good old fashioned riding your bike outside. While any child between the ages of 8-14 in the US will be eligible to participate in Bike It!, this first year we will especially be focusing our efforts on some of the communities hardest hit by childhood obesity: Atlanta, GA, Little Rock, AR, Birmingham, AL, Phoenix, AZ, Charleston, SC and Washington, DC.
FAST FACTS ABOUT BIKE IT!
EYES ON YOUR PRIZE!
We've partnered with companies like Nutcase Helmets to reward kids who stay active all summer long. Participating kids will "race" each other to the finish line virtually and on their bikes to be the first to reach their pre-set goal week after week. Goals reached = gifts! Bike It! kids will also earn "social swag" with custom badges and graphics that they can share with their friends and family on social media to show off their accomplishments
MEET COACH MICAYLA
My City Bikes spokesperson and world class pro mountain bike racer Micayla Gatto is a coach and advocate for young cyclists. Micayla really got into bikes when she was 11 years old because she wanted to be like her older brother. She kicks butt all over the world and inspires young people - especially girls - to be fearless, have fun, and learn through her example that there's no such thing as a "boys sport."
Micayla will virtually coach Bike It! kids on how to handle their bikes wherever they ride through their local My City Bikes mobile app.
AS FEATURED IN...
My City Bikes is the essential national web and mobile campaign aligning coverage in local and national media, mobile resources, bike shop advocates and municipal governments in a coordinated effort to support and engage new cyclists. My City Bikes online and mobile resources reach millions of users across the nation who put the campaign into action in their local communities by riding their bikes. We are a campaign started by cyclists for cyclists, and we're improving health through biking. My City Bikes began R&D in 2011, and the campaign made its public debut in May 2014. In less that 1 year since the first campaign resources went live we have reached more than 2.8 million Americans through our online presence, local mobile apps and media advocacy. Our online and mobile resources continue to expand to accommodate communities across the nation, and will include need-to-know beginner biking information for all 50 states, DC and Puerto Rico by year's end.
